About Us

The Classic Bed Company believes that buying the right bed is as important as eating well and exercising to stay healthy. In 1988, Dr. Chris Idzikowski discovered that when someone changed from an uncomfortable bed to a more comfortable one, they could increase the average minutes they slept each night up to 42 minutes. This beats the amount of sleep produced by over the counter sleeping pills by 4 times.

We at the Classic Bed Company feel it is important, if you are sleeping poorly and want to improve your sleep quality, that we help you understand what makes for a good nights sleep. We have developed this information to help you be well informed when buying your next bed. We also want to show you the products we carry that can help you achieve this great night's sleep.

One thing people often do not seem to realise is that they are not sleeping in a big enough bed. The standard size double bed only measures 4 feet 6 inches by 135 cm in width. This does not provide an adequate amount of space for an average sized couple to sleep together without bothering one another. If a couple moves up, even one size, to a 5 foot by 150 cm bed (this is called king size) this will make a significant improvement in their quality of sleep.

Something else, that needs to be thought about when buying a bed, is how to know whether the bed will actually be comfortable over the course of a whole night. Since there is such a short amount of time to sit and lie on beds while in the store, this is an excellent question. Unfortunately it is not one a salesperson can answer for you though. Your comfort is determined by you and only you.

We want to help you find a bed that matches your personal preferences

There are people who, when they lie down to sleep at night, want to feel as if they are becoming submerged in their mattress. Others want to sleep on top of a firm mattress. The Classic Bed Company's sales staff wants to help you find a bed that matches your personal preferences. It is important to us that our customers feel comfortable trying out as many beds as it takes to find just the right one. We want them to take their time and not feel pressured to make a decision until they are ready.

Even though the selection of a bed should be about personal comfort, we always have customers who ask us to tell them what is best for their backs, firm or soft. Our answer is that they need to find the bed that offers appropriate support for their spine and is comfortable to them. We tell them this does not necessarily mean hard but, it could if it felt right.

We also want them to know that there is not a general standard of what firmness means in the UK. We want them to know that it is important, if they have a back, spine, or skeletal problem, that they get a recommendation from their doctor about what kind of mattress to buy.

A general rule of thumb, for getting a new bed, is every 6 to 9 years. This rule has evolved because basically 70% of a bed's original support and quality deteriorates within this length of time. If a bed takes abuse and excessive use, it may need to be changed after only five years. You can tell whether a bed is losing its original quality by noticing if you are waking up in the morning being stiff or if you can see broken springs.

Another question we frequently get from customers is, does a high priced bed give you a better night's sleep? The answer is - not necessarily so. Again, the reality is that comfort is an individual perception. A soft expensive mattress can be very uncomfortable if you are someone who likes a firm mattress.

A few last tips about buying a bed include:

Decide what you want in a bed and research what the market offers to meet your criteria.

Select two-to three of the beds you researched and go try them out. Lie on each bed for 5 to 10 minutes. If you still don't know if the bed is good for you, stay longer even up to an hour. The bed you chose should improve your life so, don't be hasty.

Do not buy a bed because of the label.

Be sure you can get in and out of the bed easily and that the height doesn't force you to jump.

Think about whether an adjustable bed might meet more of your sleeping and comfort needs?

Even though you buy the right bed for yourself, if you use pillows that do not support your neck, you have thrown money down the drain.

When you have found the perfect bed and mattress, be sure you use an appropriate position when sleeping. Sleeping on your side is less problematic than sleeping on your stomach.

We hope we have provided you with plenty of food for thought when shopping for your next bed.
