Protecting and caring for your
bed or mattress. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Sleep is one of the most important contributors
to your health and happiness, and yet, according to some sources,
as many as 80% of UK adults do not get enough sleep. When you
sleep, your body works to replace and repair lost cells and
other damage. Without the "repair time", none of your body's
system function at peak efficiency. When you don't get enough
sleep, you are more at risk of becoming ill or depressed, more
likely to have a motor accident or other accident involving
mechanical things, and more likely to forget important things.
Your work suffers, your emotional life suffers and your health
suffers.
Of the many factors that contribute to good, healthy sleep,
your bed is one of the most important. The average UK adult
spends six to eight hours a day lying on their bed. An uncomfortable
bed can not only interfere with sleep, it can worsen and even
cause pain in your back, shoulders, neck and legs. Sleeping
on an inadequate mattress can leave you waking in the morning
feeling worse than if you had not slept at all.
With all that in mind, we offer the following information about
beds, bedding, mattresses and sleep in conjunction with The
Better Sleep Council of Great Britain in the hopes that all
your nights will be blessed with refreshing sleep. |

General Bedding Terms, Sleep
Wisdom and Advice |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Firm or extra firm
Firm and extra firm are designations of mattress density. There's
no standardized measure of firmness - one company's extra firm
may be softer than another's firm mattress. That's why it's
important to test a mattress thoroughly before you take it home
with you. Just having a quick lie-down on it isn't enough. It's
recommended that you lie on the mattress for at least twenty
minutes to get a feel for how firm it really is.
Keep in mind, too, that your weight will have a bearing on how
firm a mattress feels to you. The less your weight, the more
firm a mattress will seem. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Pillow-Top
Pillow top mattresses feature an extra layer of cushioning atop
the mattress. The extra padding softens the support, making
the bed softer without compromising support. Because the pillow
top often adds inches to the depth of the mattress, pillow top
mattresses may require extra deep base sheets. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Mattress Core
The mattress core is the heart of the mattress, the part of
it which provides support. The mattress core may consist of
wire springs in various configurations, latex foam or other
fillings. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Open coil unit
Open coil units are generally favoured by larger manufacturers
for their economy and budget mattresses. Since the coils are
not pocketed or individually attached, the manufacturing costs
are lower. The density of the springs and the number of coils
determine the firmness of the mattress. Open coil mattresses
are available in a variety of tension options. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Fillings
The filling or fillings are the materials used in creating the
layers of comfort in a mattress. A wide variety of fillings
are used, including horse hair, cotton, polyester, silk, wool
and foam. The quality and quantity of the fillings directly
affects the price of the mattress. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Hand Finished
Hand finishing generally refers to the needlework involved in
side stitching pocket sprung mattresses. A needle with thick
twine is sewn through the side of the mattress and connects
to the spring unit to ensure that there is no movement during
the life of the mattress. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Side Stitching
Mattress edges take a lot of wear, what with being sat on all
the time. Quality mattresses are finished with two, three or
four rows of hand stitching to firmly secure the edge coils
in place. This ensures the necessary rigidity and support to
the outer edges of the mattres and lengthens the life of the
mattress. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Mattress Handles
While many of today's mattresses are no-turn, they often still
have mattress handles for those who prefer to turn their mattresses.
Mattress handles are padded with cushioning and flag stitched
with double stitching, not only to make turning a mattress easier
but also to create perfect ventilation holes without the need
for metal fixings. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Hand Tufting
Hand tufting of the filling materials compresses the filling
materials and secures them to the inner springs so that they
do not shift or bunch under your body's weight. The traditional
process ensures better back support and provides minimum wear
and maximum durability. In short, hand tufted mattresses are
more supportive and comfortable, and will last longer. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Pocketed spring system
Pocketed spring systems offer superb resilience, support and
comfort. Pocketed springs can move and respond individually
to movement and weight, creating a more reflexive and comfortable
sleep surface. Spring counts for pocketed spring mattresses
are generally given for a king size bed. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Futons
Futon mattresses are derived from traditional Japanese
mattresses which are designed to be folded away when not in
use. Generally thinner than traditional mattresses, futons are
often filled with cotton batting and may be folded away to serve
as chairs or sofas. Some are specifically designed for use on
slatted or sprung-slatted beds or to be used on their own on
the floor.
A good quality futon is now considered a healthier way to sleep,
and is much sought after by back pain sufferers - a futon is
firm yet soft, warm in winter yet cool in summer. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Filling Materials |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Mattress fillings are the materials used to cushion
the spring system and provide padding between the springs and
the top of the mattress. The materials used vary with the quality
and price of the mattress, but may include horse hair, cotton,
wool, lambs wool, silk and mohair. Some of the most common filling
and upholstery materials include: |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Cotton Felt
Natural cotton felt is processed from raw cotton which is formed
into a layer and treated with natural oils and fire retardants.
It offers softness and resilience and is one of the most commonly
used mattress fillers. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Lambs wool
Lambs wool has unique properties that make it a natural insulator.
The structure of the lambs wool helps retain warmth while wicking
body moisture away from the body. It offers luxurious softness
and warmth and is often used along with cotton in luxury mattresses.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Curled Loose Hair
Horse hair and other animal hair is often used as a mattress
filling because of its natural resilience. Curled hair maintains
its springiness longer than any other fillings and contributes
to a deep, luxurious feel. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Natural Teased Hair Pad
Combining the attributes of natural hair and the durability
of woven or fixed pads, hair pads are made of natural hair that
has been caught and threaded to create a pad which is less likely
to bunch or shift, creating lumps in the mattress. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Latex
Latex is a 100% natural material created from the sap of rubber
trees. This material is moulded using the Talalay process ensuring
excellent natural ventilation properties. Latex is extremely
durable, hypoallergenic and anti-microbial. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Memory Foam
Memory foam, also known as visco elastic foam or slow release
foam, was originally developed by NASA scientists to absorb
the tremendous pressure to which astronauts were subjected as
they exited and re-entered the Earth's atmosphere. Because it
shapes to your body and provides equal, even support, it is
often used in hospitals throughout the world to prevent pressure
sores and discomfort in patients who must lie in one position
for many hours at a time.
Memory foam automatically senses your body weight and temperature
so that it can mould to your exact shape and position, providing
total, even support for your entire body throughout the night.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Mohair
The long, silky soft hair of the Angora goat has long been regarded
as one of the most luxurious mattress fillings. It provides
superior resilience and luxurious softness.. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Cashmere and Cashmere Pad
Cashmere, the soft underdown shed by the Kashmir goat each year,
is widely regarded as one of the world's softest and most luxurious
fibers. It is often used not only as filling but as the cover
for high end luxury mattresses. |
|

| |
Mattress Care Advice |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Replace your mattress every ten years, or when
it begins to show signs of wear. It is important to replace
both mattress and base together. A new mattress on an old base
will not offer the support it was meant to give.
Leave your bedding pulled back for twenty minutes or more in
the morning after you rise to allow your body moisture to fully
evaporate and your bedding to air naturally.
Use a mattress protector to prevent soiling or staining.
If your mattress does become soiled, clean it with fresh water
and mild washing up liquid. Do not use dry cleaning chemicals
or upholstery cleaners which might alter colors and/or affect
the fire retardant finish. Sponge lightly with a well-wrung
cloth and do not soak.
If your mattress gets wet, stand it on end away from heat to
dry after blotting the wet spot with clean toweling.
If your mattress requires turning, it should be turned side
to side and top to tail weekly for the first three months, and
monthly thereafter. Turning the mattress ensures that the natural
fillings inside your mattress settle evenly and prevents sagging
in the middle where your weight is most concentrated during
sleep.
On no turn mattresses, it is still recommended that you turn
your mattress twice a year to ensure even wear on the materials.
Regular brushing and airing is recommended. |
