The beds that first provided sleeping
space for people in this world were the ones that were made
in the Neolithic period, which was 10,000 years ago. With
large stones as their foundations, these beds were probably
made of hay or straw.
In the year 3400 BC, King Tut, the Egyptian pharaoh, had a
special bed created for him that was made of gold and ebony.
However, the common people in his kingdom all slept on such
simple things as palm bows piled in their rooms. It can be
said though that the first luxury beds that truly served the
comforts of the people were made during the Roman Empire.
With all the wealth of the Emperors, it can be expected that
they were the ones who had the first of the most opulent beds.
These beds were adorned with silver, bronze or gold and had
luxurious mattresses that were stuffed with wool, hay, reeds
or feathers.
Also, the Romans made the most important discovery in the
bed-making business. They were the ones who first discovered
the world-famous waterbeds. However, their waterbeds were
different from the modern ones. Then, they would lie down
on a warm-water cradle until they become very drowsy. After
that, they would be lifted to another mattressed-cradle next
to their own innovation of a waterbed. Here, they would be
rocked to sleep.
The beds of the bygone eras might not have been as comfortable
as the ones we have now. However, the opulence of ancient
beds cannot be matched by those in modern times.
