The evolution of the beds saw
much development during the modern times. The popularity of
mattresses started during the time of the Dark Ages. However,
bed-making did not become very sophisticated until the Renaissance
period.
It was during the Renaissance that innovations were thought
up, such as the customization of mattresses to suit different
types of beds. Then, the mattresses were made by stuffing
them with coarse tick. Usually, these ticks were added on
with straws, pea shucks or feathers. The mattresses were then
covered with rich fabrics such as brocades, velvet or silk.
However, in the 16th and 17th century, more innovations were
introduced in the making of beds. This was when lattice works
made of rope were used as the foundations of the rich and
luxurious mattresses that were so popular in the Renaissance
period. This was when the saying, "sleep tight"
came to be. It was mainly because of the fact that a bed was
considered more comfortable when its rope was knitted more
tightly together.
The iron structure for beds was introduced during the 18th
century. This contraption was invented along with using cotton
as mattress stuffing. These two discoveries ended the times
when bed bugs were literally synonymous with having beds,
even with the most opulent ones. The bed structure made of
coil spring was first patented during the year 1865.
As such, we can all see where our preferences for beds came
from. Although almost none of us can say that we have the
same beds as those made in the earliest times, there are still
some of us who have beds from the modern times that are already
considered antique beds.
