About Divan Beds
It may be of interest to know that the divan bed actual started life as a sofa. Back in the 18th century the divan sofa had three seat cushions for the base and a low back with scattered cushions. They were considered to be the most luxurious sofas of the day, commonly found in coffee houses and this is how the divan bed gets its name.
It is therefore possible to use your divan bed as a sofa all you need do is to set it against a wall and place some cushioned to support your back, this way you are using your divan bed as it was traditional designed for. A very practical solution if you just a studio or small bedroom where you need some seating during the day.
Divan beds can come as a solid base for your mattress or as a cushioned or sprung base. Generally the solid bases are cheaper than and not as comfortable as the sprung bases. With new designs in divans it is now possible to have adjustable divan beds, divan beds with drawers giving ample room for bed clothes and other nik naks.
Aesthetically the divan differs from other beds by looking more like a large mattress there is not wood or metal frame and the whole bed base is covered in fabric. Many people choose to cover the base of their divan with a valence sheet; the valence sheet can match the rest of the bed linen and add some class to an otherwise mundane piece of furniture.
