Futons are great to use as a sofa
during the day and, with a great futon mattress, can serve
as a bed at night. However, the bed function doesn’t
work out too well if the futon mattress is not suitable for
sleeping. Sometimes they can be too hard, not level, or they
don’t offer any support at all. That is why it is important
to consider during the buying process that someone just might
be sleeping on this piece of furniture and it needs to allow
that individual the sleep that they need in order to be productive
throughout their day.
Some have a misconception that it is the frame that makes
the futon comfortable, but it is actually the mattress that
gets the job done. It is important to know that futons come
in bi-fold where the mattress is folded in half and tri-fold
where the mattress is folded into thirds. Be careful when
making this decision because a tri-fold is going to be thinner
and not offer as much support as a bi-fold. Therefore, if
the futon is going to be frequently used for sleeping, a bi-fold
may be the right decision.
Things to look at are: flexibility, weight, rigidity, and
firmness. Lighter is good as long as it provides comfort,
but heavier is good in cases of frequent use. The rigidity
is going to determine how well the mattress will keep shape
and of course flexibility is how the mattress will fold. Simply
keep these things in mind for the next futon purchase and
you’ll be comfortable in no time.
