There are many stories of college
students sleeping with their mattress on the floor or individuals
who have placed their mattress on a frame without the support
of a box spring. At first, it may not seem as if the mattress
needs the box spring, but over time it becomes quite obvious
that comfort can be compromised without it and then there
is the fact that a mattress without proper support can wear
somewhat quicker than a mattress with proper support.
However, the argument extends from the fact that mattresses
can more or less function properly on any firm surface, which
includes the college student’s bedroom floor. Nevertheless,
the life of the mattress is still compromised to an extent
because all of the force is not exerted on the springs of
the mattress alone. The box spring actually absorbs some of
the force, which takes a lot of the stress away from the springs.
Many manufacturers go ahead and include a box spring with
their mattresses and they say that the box spring included
with it is meant to go with it. That at least takes the stress
out of having to find a box spring that will fit the mattress
correctly.
Needless to say, there are two things that the box spring
inarguably does and those things are that it makes the bed
taller and softens the bed’s firmness. The fact that
a box spring can extend the mattress’s life comes in
at third place. Otherwise, a platform bed is a good choice.
