All you need to know about Mattresses
Most people spend about a third of their life in bed and therefore it is important that the mattress you sleep on gives you the right support and comfort for a well rested night`s sleep. In addition to comfort, support and price, mattress size is a major consideration while searching for the right mattress.
Mattress sizesThere are many sizes of mattresses available in the market. To purchase the right mattress, it is necessary to decide how the mattress is used and where it will be used. Is it for one person, for a couple or as a guest bedroom etc?
Another major factor will be the size of bedroom in which it will be put. Mattresses are designed to accommodate one or two persons at a time without any space problems. Mattresses with restricted space will not provide you with a comfortable night`s sleep.
Single MattressesSingle mattresses are usually only suitable for a single person or for a child`s bedroom. Measuring 3 foot in width (or 90 cm) and 6 foot 3ins long (190 cm). They can also be used in small guest bedrooms or as part of a pair in a twin room. In a traditional bedroom setup using these beds, they are placed parallel to each other with a night table in between. This is a classic design for bedrooms for couples, guests.
Double MattressesThe double mattress is the most popular size of mattress. The double bed has been the standard in the UK for many years. They are four foot six wide (135cm) and six foot three (190cm) long and provide space for two people to sleep. This size double mattress is ideal for a single person who likes plenty of room in the bed so they can stretch out. When used as a mattress for two people to share it must be remembered that the amount of space for each person is much less than when they slept in a single bed.
Queen MattressesIf a couple has a limited space in their bedroom; a queen-size mattress is usually a better choice for them than a double mattress. Queen beds may not have the generous space that king-size beds provide, but, at least, they're not too cramped like double beds. The size of a queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.
King Size MattressGaining in popularity all the time is the king size mattress, they provide extra space both horizontally and in length. They measure a generous 5 foot (150cm) by six foot six (200cm)
Always have the largest mattress that you can to give you the best night`s sleep
Mattress FillingThe mattress filling is also very important. There are two main types of mattresses, those with springs and those without springs. The majority of mattresses are built using springs which is the main support for the body as you sleep. These springs can be of various tensions to give different firmness. They can also be zoned to give extra support where it is needed such the hips and shoulders. They can also have different spring tension on each side of the mattress for couples who require a different firmness. There are three types of spring interiors including open spring, continuous spring and pocket spring. The pocket spring system is the best as the springs are separate from each other and therefore any movement on one side of the bed will not disturb a partner on the other side.
The most common non spring mattresses are constructed using Foam. Most foam mattresses are made using various levels of foam with different densities to give alternative levels of support. The foam mattress uses either polyurethane foam or Latex. The benefits of using foam are that it moulds to the shape of your body as you lie on it. That is why it is generally called Memory Foam. There are a wide range of other different fillings to provide extra comfort which are used to cover the springs or foam. These include cotton, wool, hair, silk, cashmere and mohair. Depending which filling is used will determine the overall comfort and support the mattress will give.
Always remember the mattress is the most important part of the bed as its choice will determine the comfort and support for that perfect night`s sleep.
