Beds and mattresses 'could be recycled with new machinery'
A new recycling plant has been commissioned which can shred beds and mattresses in one minute.
The facility, built by Transworld Recycling Machinery, can also recycle other furniture such as tables, chairs and divans using its 400kw single shaft shredder which can cope with 60 units an hour.
Once the item of furniture has been fed into the machine it is reduced down and sent to separating tables which use an overhead magnet to remove any steel from the beds ready for further recycling.
This is the first machine of its kind in the UK and the waste can be transformed into energy.
It is hoped this will cut transport costs as well as landfill and storage issues.
Last month it was reported by the Hume Star that the town's city council are launching a free recycling day to encourage residents to dispose of their old mattresses in a more environmentally friendly way.
