Community holds 'sleep out for the homeless'

Residents in one area of north America are abandoning their comfy beds and mattresses for a night in order to raise money for homeless people.

The annual Sleep Out Saturday will see participants leave their homes from all over DuPage County to spend the night outside, the Daily Herald reports.

There will also be entertainment and testimonials at the rally, which organiser are hoping will raise $135,000 (£83,000)

"It really is an amazing opportunity for those of us on the inside to sleep outside for one night and really feel empathy and compassion for people who are without," event coordinator Lisa Hendrick said.

This is the fifth year that the event has taken place and around 75 per cent of participants are aged between 14 and 18, with 10 per cent being adults.

In Washington, 178 additional beds were made available for homeless people as temperatures were predicted to reach freezing conditions.
