Lack of sleep 'turns people into liars'
Lack of sleep can cause people to lie unintentionally because they are making up memories, it has been found.
A new experiment conducted by German researchers saw a group of people stay awake for 44 hours straight. Afterwards, it was found that the participants were far more likely to make up false memories, science blog the Frontal Cortex reports.
Although it has been known for a long time that many recollections are established while dreaming, this is the first time that the connection between sleep deprivation and false memories has been established.
Interestingly, the experiment also found that when people drank coffee before attempting to recall the memories, any unintentional dishonesty disappeared.
According to the BBC, other areas of the brain that are affected by lack of sleep include language, planning and sense of time. Response and judgement levels can also decrease.
