Canadians given a helping hand to dispose of mattresses

Almost 100 per cent of the materials used to make a mattress can be recycled which means that it is a waste to throw them onto dumps, it has been reported today.

Hundred of thousands of mattresses are disposed of every year which can cause problems for councils and officials, globeandmail.com writes.

Now there is a new drive by a mattress retailer in Canada to begin recycling the old mattresses it collects when delivering new ones to customers.

Christine Magee, president of Sleep Country, said: "It was a conscious effort to divert as much as we can that goes to the landfill."

Previously, the retailer gave some of the more lightly-used mattresses it collected to charities, however they often found that many suffered from too much wear and tear.

Last month the Hume Star covered a free mattress recycling day in Australia where people were encouraged to dispose of their old mattresses in a more environmentally friendly way.
