Sleepless nights caused by restless leg syndrome

Some people who cannot get comfortable on their mattress at night because they experience strange sensations in their legs may be suffering from a condition called restless leg syndrome (RLS).

The German Professional Association of Neurologists has stated that around 20 per cent of sleep deprivation may be caused by RLS that has not yet been diagnosed, Earth Times reports.

Those with the condition may find that they experience "prickling and tugging in the legs" as well as a desire to stretch their muscles.

In turn this can lead to them getting a poor quality sleep which leaves them feeling fatigued and unable to concentrate the next day.

Frank Bergmann, from the German association, said: "Certain substances such as stomach acid blockers, lithium and caffeine can trigger the symptoms."

According to the RLS:UK organisation, around eight per cent of the US population has the syndrome, however figures are not yet available for the UK.
