Economic worries 'cause most sleep loss for Americans'

A new survey has revealed the issues which are currently troubling many Americans and are most likely to keep them awake in bed at night.

The poll, conducted for AmericInn Hotels, found that six out of ten adults have trouble falling asleep at least one night a week, Imperial Valley News reports.

A further ten per cent said they had difficulty sleeping every night.

When asked what was troubling them the most, 36 per cent of respondents claimed they had concerns about the economy.

Others lost sleep because of high energy prices while 28 per cent worried about health and medical problems.

Dr. Christopher Drake, bioscientific investigator at the Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Disorders and Research Centre, said: "With all the worries and concerns of modern life, sleeplessness is happening whether we like it or not."

He said it was important to tackle the stress leading to sleep loss "before it becomes a full-blown medical issue".

In the UK, Bupa has found that more women than men are loosing sleep because they are worried or stressed.
