Research reveals sleep and spicy meals don't mix

Those who love curry may find they can have trouble drifting off at night as eating spicy foods before going to bed can lead to a poor sleep, research has found.

A study has been published in the International Journal of Psychophysiology by a team of Australian researchers which looked into the effects of eating hot foods before dozing off, Indianexpress.com reports.

A group of men were asked to consume meals containing Tabasco sauce and mustard on some evenings, and then spice-free dinners on others.

It was found that there were significant changes in the subjects' sleep patterns on the nights when they had eaten the spicy foods and they took longer to drift off.

"They spent less time in both the light phase of sleep known as Stage 2 and the deep, slow-wave Stages 3 and 4," the website reports.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, eating too much sugar can also lead to an inability to sleep.
