Ealing's elderly sleep safe and warm
Elderly people in Ealing may feel safe in the knowledge that they will get a good and safe night's sleep in bed following a series of safety checks that have been carried out.
Ealing Council's trading standards officers worked with the fire brigade to test over 50 electric blankets used by older people to keep warm as the winter weather sets in.
It is hoped that the initiative will help prevent accidents and the break out of fires in homes.
Mr Tingey, an electrical safety consultant, said: "Some of the blankets I see coming in are really dangerous, but that's the point of doing these tests, to try and stop people suffering because of faulty equipment."
Anyone who is found to own a faulty blanket is given a voucher courtesy of Ealing Council to help cover the cost of purchasing a new one.
Last week it was reported that some students may be feeling the cold at night as a group from Bristol University slept outside to raise awareness of homelessness in the area.
