Once Upon a Mattress takes to the stage
Mattresses have taken centre stage in America recently as one amateur dramatics director described why he chose to put on a production of modern musical Once Upon a Mattress.
Based on the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale The Princess and the Pea, the show has been a favourite of theatre goers from Broadway to school productions, according to Kitsap Sun.
Now Corey McDaniel is putting on the musical, which starred Carol Burnett in the original production, with Bainbridge Performing Arts.
He said: "It's just pure fun. It's over the top."
Mr McDaniel also added: "You can get away with things you can't get away with in other shows, it's like, anything goes. Still, the characters are based in a realistic place, so the audience can relate to them."
In the UK, singer Sarah Brightman sat atop a pile of mattresses onstage at the end of last month as part of a performance inspired by the Princess and the Pea, the Daily Mail reported.
