More sleep 'reduces number of teenage car accidents'
School officials in the US have reduced the number of traffic accidents involving teenagers by letting them have more sleep, it has been revealed.
According to The New York Times, the morning start time of schools in Lexington was put back by an hour.
As a result, students said they were getting more sleep in bed and were also found to be involved in fewer road accidents.
The findings, which were published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, support the idea that getting more sleep may have broader health benefits for teenagers.
Average crash rates in the county for 17 to 19-year-olds were down by 16 per cent while they increased in other areas of the state.
In related news, for one in four adults who have trouble sleeping at night, their main worries are about finances, the credit crunch and the economy, the British Sleep Council claims.
