REM study gives brain disease warning
New research has found that those people who act out their dreams when they are asleep in bed may be at risk from developing dementia.
Canadian researchers studied 93 people suffering from rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder, which can see them punching and kicking when they are dreaming.
More than a quarter of these were diagnosed with a degenerative brain condition over the next five years.
Although the reason for the link is unclear, it is thought that subtle damage to the part of the brain which regulates sleep could be responsible.
Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer's Society, pointed out that the results are interesting in relation to Lewy body dementia.
"This important finding could boost our understanding of how Lewy Body Dementia develops and help us detect it early," she added.
In related news, a recent study by the University of Chicago found that people who sleep for longer are likely to have clearer arteries.
