Parents advised to be cautious with bunk beds

Parents have been advised to think twice before purchasing bunk beds for their young children to sleep in.

Writing for the Daily Herald, Dr Helen Minciotti claims that six years old is the acceptable cut off point for allowing children to sleep in the top bunk bed.

In a recent study published in the journal Paediatrics, experts at the Centre for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio found that 36,000 children and young adults are affected by bunk bed injuries every year.

Half of these injuries occur in children under the age of six.

However, young adults aged between 18 and 21 have twice as many accidents as teenagers.

Most bunk bed-related injuries occur due to falls and therefore the America Home Furnishing Alliance recommends fitting guard rails to a bunk bed if it does not already have some.

According to the Schenectady Gazette, overweight children are more at risk from developing sleep apnoea.
