Kick the caffeine 'to sleep better in bed'

A study has been conducted to assess how drinking coffee impacts upon people's quality of sleep in bed at night.

The Montreal Gazette reports that a study was conducted whereby patients were given carefully controlled and measured amounts of caffeine.

Some of this was in the form of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee, while other volunteers were given caffeine tablets and placebos.

It was found that subjects fell asleep much easier if they were not ingesting the substance and that they also enjoyed a longer and sounder sleep if they had not consumed any.

However, the publication warns anyone who does have a strong dependence on caffeine that if they try and remove it from their diet in order to sleep better, they may experience a few days of headaches and grumpiness.

According to Ajc.com, caffeine has been shown to block adenosine receptors and getting enough adenosine during the day is one of the triggers that cause people to nod off at night.
