Sleep-deprived students 'putting studies at risk'
Sleep-deprived students who do not get enough rest in bed every night may be putting their studies at risk, it has been claimed.
The University Echo reports that keeping up with assignments, going to lectures, a part-time job and spending time with friends often means that students are too busy to get a proper rest in bed.
Ivey Woodard, adult nurse practitioner at University Health Services, supported this claim and emphasised that students who regularly drink go out instead of going to bed can seem especially worn down.
She also highlighted that those in their first year of university can be most affected from sleep deprivation as they struggle to be consistent with the times that they go to bed and get up every morning.
Sleep deprivation can have severe effects on a person's physical and mental health, as well as impacting upon cognitive functioning.
