Elderly people 'can have more trouble sleeping'

Elderly people can sometimes have trouble falling asleep in bed at night because they sleep differently to younger people, one doctor has discussed.

Writing on Black Voice News Online, Doctor Levister describes that the deepest stage of sleep for humans is known as delta sleep.

However, compared to younger generations, middle-aged and elderly people spend less time in this state when they are in bed and some fail to reach it at all, he continues.

Dr Levister stated: "You need to accept that there may be a reduction in sleep quality, quantity and depth as we age.

"But if you are experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness – not just fatigue, but feeling so drowsy that you fall asleep inappropriately during the day – you should seek medical help."

Elderly people who experience joint pain when they go to bed, may find that a Tempur mattress helps as the memory foam material supports the body's natural curves.
