New research has indicated that women who suffer from poor quality of sleep may be more at risk of heart disease.
The study, carried out at Duke University Medical Centre, North Carolina, found that women who found falling asleep difficult had an increased amount of substances in the blood linked to type two diabetes and heart problems, according to Reuters Health.
In addition to this the women also experienced higher levels of psychological distress, the website reports.
Lead researcher Dr Edward C Suarez told the website: "Interestingly, it appears that it is not so much the overall poor sleep quality that was associated with greater risk, but rather the length of time it takes a person to fall asleep that takes the highest toll."
For the study, 210 healthy men and women who did not have medically diagnosed sleep disorders were questioned on their sleeping patterns.
In the case of the men surveyed, no link was found between bad sleep and mental or physical health problems.
Tempur memory foam mattresses have been shown in recent research to reduce tossing and turning by up to 83 per cent, helping the sleeper fall asleep quickly and comfortably.
