New research has suggested that disrupted sleep patterns have a greater effect on the mental wellbeing of women than men.
According to a study carried out at North Carolina's Duke University Medical Centre, unhealthy sleep patterns cause greater feelings of hostility, anger and grumpiness in the supposedly fairer sex, according to the New Zealand Herald.
Lead researcher Edward Suarez is quoted by the newspaper as saying: "This is the first empirical evidence that supports what we have observed about the role of gender and its effects upon sleep and health.
"Women who reported taking a half an hour or more to fall asleep showed the worst risk profile."
Sleep was qualified as good or bad in the study by the amount of time it took a person to fall asleep, how many times they awoke and the total amount of sleep.
Tempurmattresses have been shown in recent research to reduce tossing and turning by up to 83 per cent, increasing the chance of falling asleep quickly and of uninterrupted shut-eye.
