The predisposition to sleepwalk has been linked to sleep deprivation and irregular bedtime patterns in a new study.
Analysts at the Sleep Research Centre at Sacre-Coeur Hospital evaluated 40 patients with a history of sleepwalking between August 2003 and March 2007 and found that 90 per cent showed increased levels of sleepwalking activity after being deprived of sleep.
Lead researcher Antonio Zadra commented: "Sleepwalkers are best to maintain a regular bedtime and avoid sleep deprivation if they wish to steer clear of somnambulism, or sleepwalking."
Participants in the study had their usual sleepwalking activity monitored after a normal night and were then not permitted to sleep for 25 hours to compare levels.
Sleep activity rose from 32 recorded incidents of "behavioural episodes" during baseline sleep to 92 after sleep deprivation, according to the study, which has been published in the Annals of Neurology.
Tempur memory foam mattresses have been shown by research to reduce tossing and turning by up to 83 per cent, increasing the chances of a good night's sleep.
