Results of a new study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine have revealed a new mattress may contribute to the reduction of back pain and stiffness.
Researchers at Oklahoma State University studied 59 healthy participants for the experiment and found that back pain was immediately reduced by switching to a newer model and continued to benefit back pain sufferers, according to ChiroEco.
Lower back discomfort, spine stiffness, sleep quality, comfort and efficiency were all quantified for the study and showed that mattresses over five years old were the chief offenders in exacerbating back pain and stiffness problems.
New mattresses were found to benefit up to 63 per cent of the participants regardless of age, sex or weight, particularly those who previously reported high levels of discomfort, the website reports.
UK charity Back Care states that 49 per cent of UK residents report incidences of back pain lasting longer than 24 hours at least once a year, while 80 per cent experience significant back pain at some point in their life.
Tempurmattresses aim to relieve back pain by reducing pressure points during sleep via their unique body-moulding material.
