Being overweight is one of the main contributory factors to problems with snoring, it has been claimed.
Snorers are being advised to 'move it or lose it' by choosing between getting in shape or facing a lifetime on the sofa, according to the Irish Independent.
Kicking a noisy other half out of bed is "a simple matter of self preservation for the non-snorer", the newspaper reports, citing research from the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association as evidence.
A recent study by the organisation found that two-thirds of people surveyed with partners that snore managed an average of only three to five hours of sleep a night, compared to the recommended eight hour optimum amount.
Overweight men are the most likely suspects, as they are more likely to have excess fat around their necks, restricting breathing, the newspapers states, although the male-female divide eradicated after the age of 70.
Those considering the separate beds option for a peaceful night's sleep may be interest to know that retailers such as Classic Bed Company now offer a wide variety of luxury single mattresses, including Vi Spring and Tempur models.
Classic Bed Company is the UK's premier bed store for ultimate comfort and luxury offering Tempur, Vi Spring, Willis and Gambier and French Sleigh beds.
