Some children who are thought to have attention deficit disorder (ADD) could actually be suffering from sleep apnoea, according to one expert.
Children with sleep apnoea stop breathing repeatedly during the night which can result in sleep deprivation, Psych Central reports.
Stephen Landers, an ear, nose and throat physician, said: "If kids aren't sleeping at night it can affect their school work and mental development."
He added if children are allowed to sleep properly many behavioural issues start to improve.
Children with sleep apnoea often snore loudly or make gasping or snorting noises.
Psych Central states any parent who is concerned that their child may have the disorder should contact their doctor.
It adds that removing the tonsils can usually treat obstructive sleep apnoea in children.
In other news, a group of researchers from Sweden have reported that kids who grow up with dogs may be more likely to become snorers in later life.
