Research published this week has been addressing what the core function of sleep is, Science News reports.
According to one of the study's authors, the search for the main reason we go to sleep each night can seem as elusive as the search for the mythological phoenix.
Professor Cirelli said: "We don't understand the purpose of sleep, but it must be important because all animals do it."
She added even the dolphin which is sometimes used as an example of an animal that does not need sleep demonstrates 'unihemispheric sleep' with one eye closed and one half of its brain displaying the slow waves associated with deep sleep.
The hypothesis of Professor Cirelli's new study is that sleep allows the brain to regroup after a day of taking in new information by giving the synapses the opportunity to damp down to baseline levels.
She concludes although there are no definite answers, the area of sleep is still a worthwhile area of research.
People who struggle to sleep may benefit from changing their mattress.
Specially-designed mattresses like those made by Tempur and Vi Spring are intended to offer high levels of comfort and a better night's sleep.
