A coroner has called for government action to reduce the number of road fatalities caused by a sleeping disorder, the Westmorland Gazette reports.
Christopher Sumner claims ministers should introduce screening for lorry drivers to test for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) after 25-year old web designer Toby Tweddell was killed when an articulated lorry ploughed into a queue of traffic on the M62.
A verdict of accidental death was delivered by Mr Sumner after it was discovered the lorry driver, Colin Wrighton, was suffering from OSA.
OSA causes a sufferer to stop breathing during sleep.
This can cause fragmented sleep and excessive tiredness during the day.
Earlier this week, new research was released which suggests the memory deterioration often experienced during old age can be exacerbated in those suffering from sleep apnoea.
The principal researcher said his findings could prove that impaired breathing during sleep can lead to serious brain injury that disrupts memory and thinking.
