People in the UK lose nearly a month's worth of sleep every year because they are worrying about being single or lonely, a new study suggests.
A survey from Parship.co.uk, the UK's leading scientific online dating service, found that loneliness was the biggest cause of stress and sleepless nights for people in the country.
According to the figures, people typically lose 28 nights of sleep per year as a result of these concerns.
The study also found that financial problems kept 18 per cent of people awake at night and that a further fifth (18 per cent) said it was work that stopped them getting a good night's sleep.
"People are more likely to associate stress and its symptoms with debt and work pressures," said Dr Victoria Lukats, a psychiatrist and Parship.co.uk's relationship and dating expert.
"However, the figures speak for themselves. Whilst many people see being single as a positive choice statistics show that the majority - 60 per cent of UK singles - would prefer to be in a relationship and are looking for that special person to share their life with."
Recent figures from Travelodge showed that work pressures meant that 28.1 million professionals in the UK were not getting enough sleep every night.
