Sleep 'necessary' for focus
Individuals who are not getting enough sleep may believe their body is functioning okay, but in fact their brain may well be in danger of suffering a "power failure", it has been claimed.
Scientists have conducted studies to observe how reduced time in bed affects the human brain and found sleep-deprived people experienced lapses in attention and focus, HealthLink reports.
The study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, found that their otherwise normal functioning means these individuals have a false sense of security in their ability to stay focused.
Neurologist Dr Michele Tagliati, said: "The study shows that if you have a good night of sleep, your ability to deal with attention lapses is different than if you don't sleep."
He added that the sleep deprived are more likely to actually fall asleep in the middle of the day, with potentially catastrophic consequences depending on what they are doing at the time.
The British Medical Association warns that lack of sleep should not be seen as a badge of honour, but instead as a serious hazard that must be dealt with.
