Sleep deprivation can lead to more accidents on the roads and other health dangers, an industry expert has warned.
The vice chairman of the Royal College of GPs (RCGP), Dr Graham Archard, explained that tiredness caused by not getting enough sleep can lead to dangerous 'secondary conditions'.
"If you are tired you stand a greater chance of having accidents both at home and at work," he added.
"There's a very significant risk of accidents from driving, which is from sleep deprivation. More people are killed on the road as a consequence of falling asleep at the wheel than drink driving. So it's actually more of a problem than drink driving."
Dr Archard also said that sleep deprivation can lead to a number of physiological problems. These can range from simply being "ratty, bad tempered and so on" to more serious issues like depression.
Finally, the doctor pointed out that not getting enough sleep can mean that people's immune systems do not function effectively.
"If you are sleep deprived, your immune system does not function so well. You'll be much more likely to catch anything from coughs, colds, sore throats...even to possibly contracting more serious illnesses later on," he concluded.
A recent study from Travelodge suggested that 28.1 million people in the UK are not getting the recommended eight hours sleep every night.
