Students who stay up too late and as a result fail to get enough sleep could find their grades worsening, new research suggests.
Dr Jung Kim, of Pohang University of Science in Technology in South Korea, presented his findings at 21st Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS) today (June 14th).
Revealing his research, Dr Kim said: "The present study shows that the greater one stayed up at night, the more maladjusted in college life, in terms of global mental health, sleep quality and academic performance.
"It seems important to give relevant information and helpful guidance on good sleep habits to students from the beginning of college life."
To make sure students perform to their best ability, Dr Kim advised that they get at least eight hours of sleep every night.
However, Dr Graham Archard, the vice chairman of Royal College of GPs, recently explained that teenagers and students were particularly likely to suffer from sleep problems because of stress.
He explained: "Particularly at this time of year when all the exams around…there's lot of young people having [sleep] problems."
