Neurons 'activated in brain during slow-wave sleep'

The benefits of a good night's sleep are well known, but not entirely understood and new research has uncovered a possible new way in which the body uses sleep to recuperate and learn.

SRI International has announced the publication of new data published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences regarding neurons that are activated in the cerbral cortext during slow wave sleep when we are in bed.

"These neurons will be important to study in sleep disorders such as insomnia." said senior director of neurobiology at SRI Thomas Kilduff, who led the research with Dmitry Gerashchenko.

He added the next step will be to work out whether these neurons act as a superhighway conducting slow waves across the cortex during sleep.

Research presented earlier this month at the Forum of European Neuroscience revealed a refreshing night's sleep in bed can boost memory.

When looking to buy contemporary beds online shoppers may be tempted by a range of Tempur mattresses and pillows which can potentially aid restful sleep.
