'Get plenty of sleep' before hitting the road
It is important to catch up on sleep and get adequate sleep before venturing out on a long car journey, drivers have been advised.
According to HealthDay News, those who drive great distances or sleep-deprived motorists can be at risk from "drowsy driving" which is potentially very dangerous.
Being too tired can put everyone at risk behind the wheel, so the National Safety Council urged drivers to get enough sleep before hitting the road.
It also said to avoid driving between midnight and the early hours, keep the in-car temperature "cool and comfortable" and take a break every 100 miles.
Longer trips are potentially safer when started early in the morning, the council said, although if motorists do start to feel tired then stopping at a service station is a good place for a quick rest.
