A new mattress 'could be the cure for sleepless nights'
New research has revealed one in four people suffers from insomnia, the Belfast Telegraph has reported.
The study by researchers at Stanford University in California found the main reason people were unable to get a decent night's kip was stress.
It also revealed women tend to get less sleep than men.
Of those questioned, 27 per cent of females said they wake up every night, in comparison to 19 per cent of males.
The Belfast Telegraph said those people who struggled to drop off at night should consider giving their bed an MOT.
It quoted a 1988 study by sleep expert Chris Idzikowski which found swapping an uncomfortable mattress for a more supportive one resulted in an average of 42 minutes extra sleep.
Tempur-pedic mattresses are renowned for the high level of support they offer.
Meanwhile, recent research by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has shown individuals with severe sleep apnea are three times more likely to die as a result of any cause than people without the condition.
