Youngsters who do not get enough sleep 'have higher blood pressure'

Teenagers who do not get enough sleep are at greater risk of high blood pressure and future heart attacks, according to a new study.

The Age reports a study of 13 to 16-year-olds revealed that those who got their heads down for less than 6.5 hours a night were up to three times more likely to have raised blood pressure.

Furthermore, the research - which was published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association - claimed the "technological invasion of the bedroom" was to blame for producing a generation of sleep-deprived teenagers.

Study author Susan Redline of University Hospital's Sleep Centre in Cleveland said texting and listening to music all night was putting teenagers' health at risk.

She stated: "Parents should optimise sleep quality for their family with regular sleep and wake times and bedrooms should be quiet, dark and conducive to sleep."

Parents looking to refurbish their teenager's bedrooms may want to consider Willis & Gambier's range of bedroom furniture.

With styles to suit every taste, it should be possible to create a room with a relaxing atmosphere which will help youngsters get a good night's sleep.
