Insomnia sufferers 'need to get to the root cause of their problem'


As we age sleep can become more difficult, one expert claims.

However, Doctor Anupama Upadya states there are no absolute rules when it comes to the amount of sleep an individual needs, the Villages Daily Sun reports.

She said: "Adequate sleep is when you sleep, you wake up in the morning and feel refreshed and work through the day without needing sleep."

Some people struggle to sleep because they have bad bedtime habits, Dr Upadya claims.

She states stimulants and alcohol should be avoided for about six hours prior to bedtime.

The bed should also only be used for sleep and not reading or watching TV, she added.

People who are experiencing insomnia are advised to get to the root cause of the problem rather than simply putting it down to old age.

Some insomnia sufferers may find changing their mattress can make a big difference.
