CBT 'can help improve sleep patterns'

Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) can reduce insomnia and fatigue and improve the quality of sleep in dialysis patients, a new study has found.

Dialysis is a treatment administered to people with kidney disease in order to remove toxins from the blood.

More than 50 per cent of people suffering from severe kidney failure who are being treated with dialysis suffer from sleeping problems.

A team of researchers from National Taiwan University Hospital have found that after four weeks of CBT treatment there was significant improvement in sleep patterns among dialysis patients, Reuters reports.

Insomnia sufferers who are unsure why they struggle to drop off at night may find changing their mattress helps.

Some mattresses, such as those produced by Tempur and Vi Spring, are specially designed to increase support and provide a more comfortable night's sleep.

Making sure you avoid stimulants for a couple of hours before going to bed can also improve sleep.
