Mums with depression 'could have sleepless babies'

Ensuring a baby develops healthy circadian rhythms – when they wake and sleep – can depend on whether the mother is depressed, new research has suggested.

Although buying the right bed or mattress for a newborn is often essential, mums who were depressed before pregnancy or those who developed mood issues while they were expecting are more likely to give birth to babies with sleep problems, according to the University of Michigan Health System.

Reported on Newswise Medical, the research found that depressed mothers' children nap more during daylight hours and take longer to get to sleep in the night – before waking up more frequently than others.

Meanwhile, a recent bed-related article in the KYPost suggested that good sleep could contribute to lower blood pressure.

It cited studies from the journals Hypertension and Case Western Reserve University – the latter of which said that teens who had difficulty sleeping were 3.5 times more likely to suffer from increased blood pressure.
