One sleepless night 'can damage health'
Not getting enough quality time in bed can have short-term effects and make lots of people tired and irritable.
But according to new research, losing sleep for part of one night can lead to tissue damage within the body, reports Science Daily.
An article by the UCLA Cousins Centre published in the forthcoming issue of Biological Psychiatry reported that missing as little as one section of a night's sleep can cause cellular pathways to produce inflammation that can damage tissue.
Researchers came to this conclusion using measurements of a nuclear factor in the body, repeatedly assessing them in the morning after normal sleep, after partial sleep and then after recovery sleep.
"The closer that we look at sleep, the more that we learn about the benefits of sleeping," remarked Dr John H Krystal, editor of Biological Psychiatry and part of the Yale University School of Medicine and the VA Connecticut Healthcare System.
Meanwhile, a recent study reported on news.com.au found that shift workers who are deprived of sleep can increase their likelihood of being involved in a car crash.
