Bunk beds 'should meet high safety standards'

Parents need to make sure bunk beds meet the latest standards, according to Freep.com.

The news provider states there are still too many bunk bed-related accidents occurring.

A study by the Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital in the US state of Ohio found that bunk beds were a common source of injury for children and adolescents.

Lara McKenzie, one of the report's authors, said: "There are a lot of bunk beds that people are still using that were manufactured prior to 2000."

She added it made sense to buy new beds that offered improved levels of safety.

Deanna Soloway-Simon, medical director of paediatric emergency at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, said she would not recommend using a bunk bed for youngsters under the age of six.

Parents who are planning to redecorate their children's bedroom may want to opt for a contemporary bed.

Contemporary beds are made in a range of materials including wood, metal, leather and cloth.
