'Women have scarier dreams than men'

Women experience scarier and more emotional nightmares than men, new research has suggested.

Scientists say the dreams are also far more vivid and disturbing, leaving more of an impression when women wake up.

The study by the University of the West of England tested 170 people and only 19 per cent of men reported their most recent dream being a nightmare compared to 30 per cent of women.

Dr Jennie Parker, who conducted the study, told the Daily Mail there was evidence connecting dreams with changes in body temperature caused by the menstrual cycle.

"Women who are premenstrual tend to dream more aggressively, and they are also more likely to remember the dreams," she said.

Dr Parker also thinks that having nightmares is a way for the brain to rehearse future events the body may find distressing or disturbing.

Dr Chris Idzikowski, director of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre, said that 20 per cent of people will report having one nightmare a week, according to the Telegraph.

A Tempur mattress can help improve people's quality of sleep as it fits around the shape of the body for improved comfort.
