Ill employees not resting in bed 'because of credit crunch'

The UK's workers are feeling the pressures of the credit crunch as they are encouraged to come to work rather than get a proper rest in bed when they are sick.

Research by health insurer HAS found that 42 per cent of employees said they were less likely to take time off during the economic downturn.

It was also found that a third of human resources professionals continue to read emails at home rather than recuperating in bed.

Richard Halley, head of sales at HAS, said companies are under pressure to get the best out of employees.

"However, this should not be done at the expense of employee health and welfare. Companies will only battle through an economic downturn with the support of their employees and their wellbeing should therefore be of paramount importance," he added.

Other recent research by MORE TH>N has shown that workers often do not take the chance to have a lie-in or relax on a comfy mattress when they take holidays from the office.
