Students risking health because of lack of sleep
Students may be risking their health because they are not getting as much sleep as they need, it has been claimed.
They may have irregular sleeping patterns which are inconsistent as they stay up partying or studying during the night, then try to make up for it by staying in bed all day, according to the Auburn Plainsman.
A good sleep pattern should be dependant on three factors: the amount of sleep, the schedule a person follows and the quality of sleep.
Students who do not get a good night's rest can also become reliant on caffeine to try and stay awake during lectures.
Mona El Sheikh, an alumni professor in human development and family studies, said sleep is "just as important for health as food and exercise".
Figures from Brown University Health Services revealed that 73 per cent of students said they have occasional sleep problems with only 11 per cent having good sleep quality, the Collegian Online reported.
