Sleep disorder? Perhaps it is something else

People who find themselves unable to get out of bed in the morning may be suffering from a sleeping disorder, but doctors should not assume so, it has been claimed.

Dr Skip Freedman, executive medical director at AllMed Healthcare Management, said that somebody who is constantly late for work could be suffering from a number of conditions.

"Doctors need to decide whether patients [who] don't like to go to work on time are depressed, have situational insomnia or circadian rhythm sleep disturbance," said Dr Freedman.

Only by eliminating these and other possibilities can medics be sure that they are treating somebody with a sleep disorder, he continued.

Meanwhile, India Express reports that ear, nose and throat (EST) experts believe there could be a link between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and heart problems.

Dr P Vijaya Krishnan, a leading ENT consultant & Head of the Sleep Laboratory at the Madras ENT Research Foundation said that sufferers are more likely to develop hypertension, which could lead to heart attack or stroke.
