Student grades suffer from lack of sleep

A new study has found a direct link between the amount of sleep college students get and how well they perform academically.

The study, conducted by the University of Minnesota, discovered that excessive use of television and computers, stress, gambling and alcohol and tobacco consumption are also contributing factors.

Around 20 per cent of students said that sleep difficulties had an impact on how well they did at college and 69.9 per cent claimed they felt stressed.

Dr Ed Ehlinger, the director and chief health officer of the University of Minnesota Boynton Health Service, said: "Turning off the computer or TV and going to sleep is one of the best things our students can do to improve their grades."

Students who stay up all night doing work or studying for tests should also be advised that this can actually shorten attention spans and make concentrating more difficult, the BBC reports.
