Technology blamed for sleep loss in teens


Technology such as the internet and computer games is being blamed for sleep loss among teenagers, it has been reported.

According to Sue Shellenbarger, blogging for the Wall Street Journal website, sleep loss, along with obesity and distractibility, is increasingly caused by teenagers staying up late texting on their mobiles or chatting to friends on the internet.

A recent study also found that students with four or more electronic devices in their bedrooms are twice as likely to fall asleep at school or while trying to do their homework.

Dr Orly Avitzur, a physician who advises Consumer Reports on medical issues, said parents need to have "a serious sleep talk with our kids".

Last week, the lack of sleep experienced by many college and university students was blamed for poor grades and an increasing number saying they felt stressed, Earth Times noted.
